In 2014, I was asked to write an article in FORUM magazine about the state of technology in Canadian schools. I began with a quote from the famous and inspiring article written in 1971 by Dr. Seymour Papert and Dr. Cynthia Solomon, on the best approaches to successfully integrate technology in classrooms. It is now an even more relevant commentary, given how technology has been deployed during the pandemic into schools, both nationally and internationally:

If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together. One of the great joys of leading a team, is that they will – if provided the right tools and venues – inspire you, and teach you.

It’s a weird anniversary, but we are coming up on a full year of pandemic times. Much of that has spent been in head-down, keep-it-together, wheels-just-staying-on-the-bus mode. Some days, thinking about the future seems hard; other days, it seems downright ridiculous.

It’s been over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic first began in Canada (the first Canadian case of the novel coronavirus was reported by Health Canada on Jan. 25, 2020); and while we have all adapted to the physical distancing and shut-downs that have come with the pandemic, we are also still learning new ways of doing business and the impact that social isolation has had on our work and personal lives.
